HOUSE EXPLOSION IN NICHOLS

6/23/2007- At 18:56, Nichols was dispatched to Dogwood Lane for the unknown explosion in the residence.  Nichols Car 4 was first on scene and reported the first floor windows of the structure had been blown out.  Upon further investigation, active fire was found in the basement and a structure fire assignment was dispatched, adding Trumbull Center and Long Hill as RIT. Nichols Engine 301 laid in from the hydrant and up the driveway to provide fire suppression.  Due to the instability of the structure and confirmation that all occupants were out of the house, all firefighting operations were kept to the exterior.  Crews operating on scene were able to contain the fire to the basement and a single room on the 1st floor.  The initial explosion lifted the house off the foundation, bulged out interior walls throughout the house, and twisted the electrical meter box so badly on the exterior that the power crew on scene was unable to open the box to pull the meter.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.  Units operating on scene were Nichols E-301, Q-303, T-304, Trumbull Center E-101, Long Hill T-204 (RIT), Huntington E-35, Nichols Car 2 & 4,   TC Car 3, LH-1, LH-4, Shelton Car 2, FM-1 and FM-3.  White Hills and Stepney provided station coverage in Nichols and Long Hill and took in an activated alarm during the Dogwood incident.  Nichols Car 4 was command.
