BUSY DAY FOR LONG HILL

 

5/31/2007- In the early afternoon hours, the Town of Trumbull experienced a large power outage. Minutes later Long Hill was dispatched to 15 Corporate Drive for an elevator rescue. Squad 209, Rescue 100 and LH-3 responded. While responding to this call, Long Hill was dispatched to 2 more fire alarms and to St. Joseph's Manor for people trapped in 3 elevators. LH-3, LH-23, and Rescue 100 proceeded to the 2 calls on Corporate Drive, and S-209 diverted to Saint Joseph's Manor.  As S-209 arrived, the power was restored and all elevators returned to normal service.

 

Soon after, Long Hill was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with a car smoking. Squad 209 and Rescue 200 responded. S-209 arrived and found a mall security vehicle that hit a parked car after the accelerator got stuck. The crew checked for injuries and secured all hazards.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

 

5/28/07-  Trumbull's Bravest were on hand for the Annual Memorial Day Parade that runs from Marisa's to the Town Hall along Main Street.  A strong showing by the membership and beautiful weather made the parade as memorable as any.  (Photo courtesy of D. Bogen)

 


 

CAR vs. POLE ON MADISON AVE

 

5/20/2007- At 02:50 hrs, Long Hill was dispatched to the area of 4691 Madison Ave for the possible MVA rollover.  LH-3 was first on scene and reported a single vehicle on its side, and a telephone pole severed in the middle of the street.  Upon further investigation the single occupant was able to self extricate himself.  Rescue 200 provided vehicle stabilization and Squad 209 provided scene stabilization.  Units cleared in 1 hour leaving the scene in the hands of Police and UI.

 


 

STOVE FIRE COOKS CABINETS

 

5/19/2007- At 12:31 hrs, Long Hill was dispatched to Elliot Road for the stove fire.  LH-4 was first on scene and reported the fire was out, but there was possible extension to the cabinets and walls.  Ladder-Tower 204 and Engine 206 killed the electrical power to the stove and hood, and checked for extension in the walls and cabinets using a thermal imaging camera.  Squad 209's crew investigated the attic for extension from the hood vent.  Units were clear in 45 minutes. 

 


 

TROOPER 1 LANDS IN THE HILL

 

5/15/2007- On Tuesday night, Long Hill members got up close and personal with Trooper 1, the Connecticut State Police Helicopter.  The 2001 Bell 407, piloted by TFC Matthew McCullough, and TFC Ben Liberatore, landed at Indian Ledge Park at 19:30 hours to allow firefighters to see the various capabilities of the aircraft. Firefighters were also able get familiar with the special circumstances associated with dealing with helicopter accidents and emergencies.  Lastly, TFC McCullough and Liberatore explained proper set up for a LZ (landing zone) in the event they have to touch down at an incident or command post.

 


 

GAS LINE BREAKS AT TRUMBULL MALL

 

5/9/2007- At 12:14 Long Hill, Trumbull Center and Nichols were dispatched to the Trumbull Shopping Park for a reported gas leak. LH-2 and Squad 209 were first on scene and reported natural gas venting from a 4" gas line that was severed by workers that were tearing down the former Macy's building. Upon further investigation, crews found gas odors in the parking deck and inside the mall. The entire mall was evacuated and the access roads were shut down. Squad 209 laid in from the closest hydrant and Engine 206 hooked up to the FD connection for the affected area. S-209, Tower Ladder 204, E-206, Engine 103 and Engine 301 investigated and metered the entire mall. Crews stood by until the gas company was able to shut down the main. Engine 101 from Stepney (Monroe) and Engine 32 from Huntington (Shelton) responded mutual aid and stood by on scene. Units cleared in 2 hours. (Photos courtesy of M. Eckert)
 


 

CAR vs. POLE ON MAIN STREET

 

5/6/2007- At 20:30 hours Sunday evening, Long Hill was alerted to the area of 5541 Main Street for a report of Wires Down. En route crews were updated that this was a motor vehicle accident with a car vs. pole.  LH-2 was first to arrive and reported a single vehicle accident with one car into a pole. Squad 209's crews arrived and assisted EMS with patient care and awaited UI to cut the power to the downed power lines. Once this was accomplished, crews stabilized the vehicle and returned to service approximately 2 hours later.  The following day, Route 111 was shut down for more than 8 hours to repair the damaged telephone poles.
