LHFD TRAINS FOR PROPANE FIRES

7/21/2009- For tonight's drill, the Long Hill Fire Department trained for propane emergencies using various props created by Station 2 Captain Mike Rowan.  The training started last week when crews from all 3 stations toured the Rural Gas Company propane facility located in Long Hill's first due on Main Street.  There, Captain Rowan displayed all the different kinds of propane vessels that can be found including gas grill tanks, tanks for home heating use & propane delivery trucks.  Crews also got to see that facilities massive storage tanks and the safeties that are in place to help prevent accidents.

The drill for the 2nd week had 3 stations; each with its own task of containing a propane problem.  All the props were constructed by Capt. Rowan to simulate all these emergencies while providing a controlled environment for crews to operate. The 1st station consisted of a 420 gallon tank that would normally be found behind a residential home that was leaking propane but was not on fire.  The 2nd station had a normal gas grill that has caught fire with the propane tank feeding the fire.  The last and final station was a 1,000 gallon above ground tank that was on fire from the feed line as well as out of the vent stack.  For this station, crews worked as a team to shield themselves from the fire & get close enough for a firefighter to shut off the feed valve.

FAREWELL & GOOD LUCK REVEREND MARK

7/3/2009- The Long Hill Fire Department is losing one of its great members.  Reverend John Mark Aheron, who serves as the Department Chaplain as well as District Commissioner is leaving next week for North Carolina to take over a congregation close to his hometown.  This evening members of the department held a farewell banquet in his honor at the Meadow Road Hall.  At tonight's event, Mark was presented various mementos & plaques from each station as well as the fire company & district.

Mark has worn many hats for the LHFD, serving as the chaplain & a commissioner as stated before, but also as a past lieutenant & active firefighter for 12 years at Station 2.  As stated tonight, we will eventually get a new chaplain, but we will never be able to replace Mark.  Thank you for everything that you have done for us & good luck in your future endeavors.
